Why Are Audi and VW Key Systems Identical?

Volkswagen AG (VAG) builds the immobilizer systems, key chips, and programming protocols for both brands. Audi, VW, Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini all use variations of the same VAG key platform. If we can program an Audi Q5, we can program a VW Tiguan. Same tools, same chip families, same OBD-II protocols.

This is why we group them on one page. The only differences between an Audi key and a VW key are the fob shell design and the blade profile (Audi uses HU66 laser cut, some newer VWs use HU162). Internally, the transponder and programming are shared.

What VAG Key Systems Does Triton Locksmith Program?

Three generations of VAG immobilizer technology:

• IMMO3 / Megamos 48 (2000-2014): The Megamos crypto transponder with a unique VAG encryption algorithm. Used on VW Golf/GTI (2006-2014), Jetta (2005-2014), Passat (2006-2015), Tiguan (2009-2017), CC, Eos. Audi A3 (2006-2013), A4 (2002-2016), A6 (2005-2011), Q5 (2009-2017), Q7 (2007-2015). Programming requires reading the immobilizer module (in the instrument cluster on most VAG vehicles) and calculating the key data. Blade blank: HU66 (laser cut). $200-$300.
• IMMO4/5 / Megamos AES (2014+): AES-128 encrypted Megamos chip. Used on VW Golf (2015+), Jetta (2015+), Tiguan (2018+), Atlas (2018+), Taos. Audi A3 (2015+), A4 (2017+), A5 (2017+), Q3 (2019+), Q5 (2018+), Q7 (2016+), Q8 (2019+). Requires our Autel IM608 Pro with VAG-specific AES calculation. More complex than Megamos 48 but we handle it daily. Blade blank: HU66 or HU162. $250-$375.
• MQB/MLB Advanced Key (proximity, 2015+): VAG's push-to-start proximity system on higher-trim models. Found on Audi A4-A8 with Advanced Key option, Q5-Q8 with Advanced Key, VW Tiguan/Atlas/Arteon with Keyless Access. Programming through the BCM/kessy (Keyless Entry Start System) module via OBD-II. $300-$400.

Audi keys cost $25-$75 more than equivalent VW keys because the fob housing is premium. The internal electronics and programming are identical.

What Makes VAG Key Programming Different from Other Brands?

VAG stores the immobilizer data in the instrument cluster, not in a separate module. On most other brands (Honda, Toyota, Ford), the immobilizer is a standalone module or integrated into the BCM. On VAG vehicles, the key data lives inside the instrument cluster's EEPROM. This means we need to read the cluster to access the immobilizer data.

On older Megamos 48 vehicles, we can read the cluster through OBD-II using our Autel IM608 Pro. On some newer Megamos AES vehicles, the read process requires additional steps (component protection bypass or direct cluster access). Our tools handle both approaches.

VAG also uses a "component protection" system where the immobilizer is linked to the specific VIN. This prevents cross-vehicle key cloning. We work within this system by generating keys that match both the VIN and the immobilizer data. Same level of security as a dealer-programmed key.

Can You Make a VW or Audi Key Without the Original?

Yes. We decode the door lock using Lishi HU66 picks (or HU162 for newer models), cut the blade, and program from scratch by reading the instrument cluster's immobilizer data. No existing key needed. All-keys-lost VAG programming is one of our specialties.

What Is KESSY on an Audi?

KESSY (Keyless Entry Start System) is Audi's name for their proximity/push-to-start module. It manages the 125 kHz proximity antennas in the door handles and the push-to-start authorization. When we program an Advanced Key fob, we register it with both the instrument cluster (immobilizer) and the KESSY module (proximity/start). Both need to recognize the fob for full functionality.
