Car Key Replacement
$150 - $350 | 30-60 minutes | Available 24/7
Triton Locksmith cuts and programs new car keys at your location for $150-$350. All makes and models from 1996 to present, including transponder keys, smart keys, and key fobs. No dealer tow. Done in 30-60 minutes on the spot.
How Does Triton Locksmith Replace a Car Key Without the Original?
We decode your lock, cut a new blade, and program the transponder chip to your car's immobilizer. Modern car keys have three layers: the physical cut (the teeth on the blade), the transponder chip (a microchip that communicates with the car's engine computer), and sometimes a remote (lock/unlock/trunk buttons). We handle all three on-site at your location.
Our Autel IM608 Pro key programmer covers over 85% of vehicles on the road. For the rest, we carry Xtool and Smart Pro units. Between the three machines, we can program keys for virtually every make and model from 1996 to present. That includes the newest AES-128 encrypted chip systems on 2024-2026 vehicles that many locksmiths can't handle yet.
The process takes 30-60 minutes depending on the vehicle:
- Decode the lock or pull the key code: We read the wafer positions in your door lock cylinder using Lishi tools, or we pull the key code from the vehicle's VIN through our database. Either method gives us the correct blade cut pattern.
- Cut the blade: We cut the new key on our mobile Triton TRJ-1 key machine. Edge-cut keys (most domestic/Asian brands) take 3-5 minutes. Laser-cut keys (most European brands) take 5-8 minutes.
- Program the transponder: We connect to the vehicle's OBD-II port, access the immobilizer module, and register the new key's chip. The car adds it to its authorized key list. This step takes 10-20 minutes depending on the vehicle's security protocol.
- Test everything: Key starts the engine. Locks and unlocks the doors. Opens the trunk. All functions verified before we leave.
How Much Does Car Key Replacement Cost by Brand?
$150-$350 from Triton Locksmith. $200-$600+ at the dealer. Here's the brand-by-brand breakdown:
- Honda: $120-$250 (Civic, Accord, CR-V, Pilot)
- Toyota: $120-$275 (Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander)
- Ford: $100-$250 (F-150, Explorer, Escape)
- Chevrolet: $100-$275 (Silverado, Equinox, Malibu)
- Nissan: $120-$275 (Altima, Rogue, Sentra)
- Hyundai/Kia: $125-$300 (Tucson, Elantra, Sportage)
- BMW: $200-$450 (3/5/X3/X5 Series)
- Mercedes: $250-$500 (C/E/GLC/GLE Class)
- Audi/VW: $200-$400 (A4, Q5, Jetta, Tiguan)
- Tesla: $250-$450 (Model 3, Y, S, X)
According to Consumer Reports' 2025 automotive survey, car key replacement is the #1 most overcharged service at dealerships. The dealer charges $200-$600+ for the same key we make for $150-$350. Plus the dealer requires you to tow the car there and wait 3-5 business days. We come to your parking spot and do it in under an hour.
Can You Make a Car Key If All Keys Are Lost?
Yes. That's actually our most common car key call. "All keys lost" means you have zero working keys. Many locksmiths can't handle this because it requires reading the vehicle's immobilizer data from scratch. We do it daily.
The process for all-keys-lost is the same as above, except we can't clone an existing key. Instead, we read the immobilizer data directly from the vehicle's ECM/BCM through the OBD-II port, generate a new key code, and program from scratch. The car accepts the new key. If you later find your old key, it'll still work unless you specifically ask us to deactivate it.
All-keys-lost replacement costs $25-$75 more than a duplicate because of the additional diagnostic steps. Still dramatically cheaper than the dealer.
What Types of Car Keys Does Triton Locksmith Replace?
Every type on the road today:
- Standard transponder key: Metal blade with a chip in the plastic head. Inserts into the ignition. Most common on 1996-2015 vehicles. $150-$200.
- Remote head key: Key blade with buttons (lock/unlock/trunk) built into the head. One piece. $175-$250.
- Key fob (separate remote): Key blade + separate remote unit. Older system, two pieces. $150-$225 for both.
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start): Stays in your pocket. Car detects it wirelessly. Press button to start. $200-$450.
- Tesla key card: NFC card programmed to your vehicle. $250-$350.
Why Is a Locksmith Cheaper Than the Dealer for Car Keys?
Lower overhead, competitive pricing, and no captive audience. Dealerships have showrooms, sales staff, parts departments, and service bays to maintain. They treat key replacement as a profit center with fat margins. A mobile locksmith has a van, tools, and key blanks. Our overhead is a fraction of the dealer's.
We also come to you. No tow truck needed ($100-$200 saved). No leaving the car at the dealer for days. No rental car while you wait. One call, one visit, one hour, done. The convenience savings alone make the decision obvious.
Do You Need Proof of Ownership for Car Key Replacement?
Yes. We ask for a driver's license, vehicle registration, title, or insurance card showing you own or are authorized to operate the vehicle. This is standard practice for every legitimate locksmith. It protects you from someone making a key to your car without your knowledge.
If you just bought the vehicle and don't have the title yet, a bill of sale works. If it's a company vehicle, written authorization from the fleet manager works. We're flexible but we do verify before cutting.
Should You Get a Spare Key Made Now?
Yes. A spare car key costs $75-$250 while you still have your original. Emergency replacement after losing your only key costs $150-$350. The spare pays for itself the first time you'd otherwise need an emergency call. We recommend every driver have at least one spare stored at home or with a family member.

Common Questions
How long does car key replacement take?
30-60 minutes at your location. Basic transponder keys are on the faster end. Smart keys with proximity and push-to-start take longer because of the programming steps.
Do I need to tow my car to a dealer?
No. We come to you and do everything on-site. Driveway, parking lot, side of the road. No tow needed.
Can you replace keys for luxury cars?
Yes. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Porsche, Tesla. We carry the programming equipment for all of them. See our brand-specific pages for pricing.
Do you program the key to start the car and unlock the doors?
Yes. Full function. The key starts the engine, unlocks the doors, and operates the trunk. Same as a dealer key.
Can you make a spare key if I still have my original?
Absolutely. That's easier and cheaper since we can clone the existing key. See our spare key service for details.
What if my car is a push-to-start model?
We handle those too. See smart key / push-to-start for details on proximity key replacement. $200-$450 depending on the brand.
How long does car key replacement take?
30-60 minutes at your location. Basic transponder keys for Honda and Toyota are on the faster end. Smart proximity fobs for BMW and Mercedes take longer due to multi-step programming protocols.
Is a locksmith-made key the same quality as a dealer key?
Functionally identical. It starts the engine, locks and unlocks the doors, and opens the trunk. The blade material and transponder chip are the same specifications. The only difference is it doesn't have the dealer's logo stamped on it.
Will my old key still work after you program a new one?
On most vehicles, yes. Adding a new key doesn't deactivate existing keys unless you specifically ask us to erase them. If your old key turns up later, it'll still work.
Can Triton Locksmith replace a lost car key if I have no spare?
Yes. We create a new key from scratch using VIN-based code cutting and on-site programming. No need to tow to a dealer.
