What Chevrolet Key Systems Does Triton Locksmith Program?
GM has used three major generations of transponder/smart key systems across Chevrolet vehicles. Each requires different chips, blanks, and programming protocols:
- PK3 / VATS II (1997-2007): GM's Passkey 3 system uses a Megamos 13 transponder chip. The key communicates with the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) mounted on the steering column. Found on Silverado (1999-2007), Tahoe/Suburban (2000-2006), Impala, Monte Carlo, Malibu (1997-2003). Programming requires a 10-minute key relearn procedure through OBD-II. Blade blanks: B111, B107. $100-$140.
- PK3+ / PKTX (2006-2017): Upgraded Passkey system with Philips/NXP 46 (Hitag 2) chip. Enhanced encryption over PK3. Found on Silverado (2007-2018), Equinox (2010-2017), Malibu (2008-2015), Traverse (2009-2017), Cruze, Impala (2006-2016). Some models use a separate remote + transponder key. Others use a flip key combining both. Blade blank: B111, HU100. $120-$175.
- Prox / Smart Key (2016+): GM's proximity/push-to-start system using Philips/NXP 49 (Hitag Pro) or newer AES-encrypted chips. Found on Silverado (2019+), Equinox (2018+), Malibu (2016+), Traverse (2018+), Tahoe/Suburban (2021+), Blazer, Trailblazer, Camaro (2016+). The fob communicates via 315 MHz for remote and 125 kHz for proximity. Programming through the BCM via OBD-II. $200-$275.

How Does Triton Locksmith Program a Chevy Key?
We connect to the OBD-II port and perform a key relearn procedure through the BCM (Body Control Module) and TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). GM's key programming process is unique in that it involves a timed relearn sequence. Here's how it works:
- Connect diagnostic tool to OBD-II port
- Read the TDM/BCM security configuration
- Initiate the key relearn mode (10-minute security timer on some models)
- Present each new key to the ignition (the system registers them in sequence)
- Complete the relearn and verify all keys start the engine
The 10-minute security timer is a GM-specific quirk. On PK3/PK3+ models, the system requires a 10-minute wait between certain programming steps. This is a security feature, not a malfunction. It adds time to the appointment but it's unavoidable on these models. We account for it in our time estimates.
Can Older Chevys Self-Program Keys?
Some 1999-2013 GM vehicles with two existing programmed keys allow self-programming of additional keys. Insert key 1, turn to ON for 5 seconds, turn OFF, remove. Insert key 2, turn to ON for 5 seconds, turn OFF, remove. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key and turn to ON. The security light turns off and the new key is registered.
This only works if you have two working keys. One key or zero keys requires professional OBD-II programming. 2014+ GM models eliminated the two-key self-programming method.
Do You Service GMC, Buick, and Cadillac Too?
Yes. All GM brands use the same key platform. GMC Sierra/Yukon/Terrain/Acadia, Buick Enclave/Encore/Envision, and Cadillac Escalade/CT4/CT5/XT4/XT5/XT6. Same PK3/PK3+/Smart Key systems. Same programming. Same pricing.

Chevrolet Key Replacement Questions
How much does a Chevy key replacement cost?
PK3 transponder: $100-$140. PK3+ / flip key: $120-$175. Smart proximity fob: $200-$275. All done at your location.
Can you make a Silverado key on-site?
Yes. All Silverado models 1999-present. PK3, PK3+, and Smart Key. We carry blanks for every year. Takes about 30-40 minutes including the 10-minute security timer on older models.
What's the 10-minute key relearn on a Chevy?
GM's security system requires a 10-minute wait period during key programming on PK3/PK3+ models. It's a built-in security timer, not a malfunction. We account for this time in our appointment. Can't be bypassed.
Do you handle GM trucks and SUVs?
Yes. Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Colorado, Canyon, Traverse, Acadia, Escalade. All GM platforms. Same key systems, same programming.
What's the difference between PK3 and PK3+?
PK3 uses a Megamos 13 chip with basic encryption. PK3+ upgraded to a Philips 46 (Hitag 2) chip with stronger encryption. Both require OBD-II programming but PK3+ needs more advanced tools. We handle both.
Can I program a Chevy key myself with two existing keys?
On some 1999-2013 models, yes. You need two working programmed keys to add a third through a self-programming sequence. If you have one or zero keys, professional equipment is required. 2014+ models don't support self-programming.
Do you service GMC, Buick, and Cadillac keys?
Yes. All GM brands use the same key platform. Sierra, Yukon, Terrain, Acadia, Enclave, Encore, Escalade, CT4, CT5, XT4, XT5, XT6. Same process, same pricing as equivalent Chevy models.
How long does Chevy key replacement take?
25-50 minutes. The 10-minute security timer on PK3/PK3+ models adds time. Smart Key models without the timer are faster at 25-35 minutes.
Can you make a Chevy key without the original?
Yes. We decode the door lock with Lishi HU100 or B111 picks, cut the blade, and program the chip through OBD-II. All-keys-lost Chevy key replacement is one of our regular calls.
Is a locksmith Chevy key the same as a dealer key?
Functionally identical. Starts the engine, locks/unlocks, opens the trunk. Same chip, same blade cut. Only difference is no Chevy bowtie logo on the key head.
