What Ford Key Systems Does Triton Locksmith Program?

Ford has used two major anti-theft key systems since 1996: PATS and Intelligent Access. Each has evolved through multiple generations with different chips and security levels. Here's the technical breakdown:

  • PATS Generation 1 (1996-2005): Passive Anti-Theft System using Texas Instruments 4C transponder chips. Fixed code. Found on F-150 (1997-2003), Explorer (1998-2005), Mustang (1996-2004), Taurus, Focus. The PATS module reads the chip through an antenna ring around the ignition. Programming requires reading the PCM's PATS parameter and registering the new key. Blade blanks: H72, H74, H84. $100-$140.
  • PATS Generation 2-3 (2005-2017): Upgraded to 4D-63 chips with 40-bit and later 80-bit encryption. Found on F-150 (2004-2017), Explorer (2006-2019), Escape (2008-2019), Fusion, Edge. The 80-bit version (used on 2011+ models) added a rolling code that made cloning impossible. Must be programmed through OBD-II. Blade blanks: H84, H92, H94. $120-$175.
  • PATS with HiTag Pro (2015+): Some newer Fords use Philips/NXP HiTag Pro chips with AES encryption instead of 4D-63. Found on select 2015+ models. Requires our most advanced programming tools. $140-$200.
  • Intelligent Access (2011+): Ford's proximity/push-to-start system. Found on Explorer (2011+), Escape (2013+), F-150 (2015+), Mustang (2015+), Bronco (2021+), Edge, Expedition. The fob uses 315 MHz for remote functions and 125 kHz for proximity detection. Programming registers the fob with the BCM (Body Control Module). Some 2018+ models require Ford's FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System) server connection. Our Autel tools have the connectivity. $200-$275.

What Is PATS and How Does It Work?

PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) is Ford's transponder immobilizer. "Passive" means it works automatically without you doing anything. When you insert and turn the key, the PATS antenna ring around the ignition sends a signal to the chip in the key head. The chip responds with its encrypted ID. The PATS module checks the ID against its stored list. If it matches, the PCM enables fuel injection and the engine starts. If it doesn't match, the engine cranks but won't fire and the theft light blinks.

PATS stores up to 8 key IDs. When we program a new key, we add its ID to the PATS parameter in the PCM. On some older Fords (1996-2007) with two existing programmed keys, you can self-program a third key through a key-cycle procedure. But if you have only one key or zero keys, professional OBD-II programming is required. That's where we come in.

What About Ford's FDRS Programming Software?

FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System) is Ford's dealer-level diagnostic platform. On some 2018+ Ford models, key programming requires a connection to Ford's cloud-based FDRS server for security verification. This is similar to what Mercedes and BMW do with their server-based systems.

Our Autel IM608 Pro handles most Ford key programming without needing FDRS. For the models that specifically require the Ford server connection, we have the authenticated access. You don't need to worry about FDRS. We handle the entire programming process at your location.

Can Older Fords Self-Program Keys?

Some 1996-2013 Fords with two working programmed keys allow self-programming of a third key. The procedure involves cycling the ignition with both existing keys in a timed sequence. The vehicle enters programming mode and accepts a new key. This is free and takes about 5 minutes.

But it only works if you have two working keys. If you have one key or zero keys, self-programming doesn't work. You need professional OBD-II equipment. 2014+ Fords eliminated self-programming entirely. Call us and we'll tell you if your specific vehicle supports it.

Ford Key Replacement Questions

How much does a Ford key replacement cost?

$100-$150 for PATS transponder keys. $125-$175 for remote head keys. $200-$275 for Intelligent Access proximity fobs. Includes cutting, programming, and testing.

Can you make an F-150 key without the dealer?

Yes. All F-150 models from 1997 to present. We cut the blade and program the PATS transponder or Intelligent Access fob on-site. No tow, no dealer appointment.

What is PATS on a Ford?

Passive Anti-Theft System. Ford's transponder immobilizer that prevents the engine from starting without a correctly programmed chip key. Standard on all Fords since 1996.

Can I program a Ford key myself?

Only if you have two existing programmed keys (1996-2013 models). The two-key self-programming procedure adds a third key. If you have one or zero keys, you need professional equipment. 2014+ Fords eliminated self-programming.

What is FDRS and do I need it?

FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System) is Ford's dealer-level programming software. Some 2018+ models require it for key programming. You don't need it. We have the tools and server access to handle FDRS-required programming at your location.

Do you replace Ford key fob batteries?

Yes. Most Ford fobs use a CR2032 or CR2450 battery. $10-$15 swap. If the fob still doesn't work after battery change, it may need reprogramming ($75-$125).

Do you service Lincoln keys too?

Yes. Lincoln is Ford's luxury division and uses the same PATS/Intelligent Access platform. MKZ, MKC, Navigator, Corsair, Aviator. Same process, same tools, same pricing.

What's the difference between 40-bit and 80-bit PATS?

40-bit PATS uses a shorter encryption key and can be cloned from an existing key. 80-bit PATS (2011+ models) uses rolling codes that prevent cloning. 80-bit keys must be programmed through OBD-II. We handle both.

How long does Ford key replacement take?

25-45 minutes at your location. PATS keys are faster. Intelligent Access fobs take longer due to proximity programming. FDRS-required models add 10-15 minutes for server connection.
