What Key Systems Do Stellantis/FCA Vehicles Use?
Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles / FCA) uses three key system generations across Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM brands:
- Standard transponder (1998-2007): Texas Instruments 4D-64 chip with SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module). Found on Jeep Wrangler TJ (1998-2006), Cherokee/Grand Cherokee (1998-2004), Dodge RAM (2002-2007), Chrysler 300 (2005-2007). The SKIM module reads the transponder and communicates with the PCM. Programming requires a PIN code or direct SKIM access. Blade blank: Y160, Y164. $125-$175.
- Fobik (2008-2023): The distinctive Stellantis key. Combines a transponder chip and remote buttons into one unit. No separate key blade. It slides into a slot on the dash or steering column. Uses Hitag 2 (46 chip) encryption. Communication with the SKREEM (Sentry Key Remote Entry Electronic Module) or WCM (Wireless Control Module). Found on Grand Cherokee (2008-2021), Charger (2008-2023), Challenger (2008-2023), RAM 1500 (2009-2018), Durango (2011+), Town & Country/Pacifica, 200/300. $150-$225.
- Keyless proximity fob (2014+): Push-to-start with proximity detection. Used on Jeep Wrangler JL (2018+), Grand Cherokee L/WL (2021+), Grand Cherokee 4xe, RAM 1500 (2019+), Dodge Hornet, Chrysler Pacifica (2017+). Uses Hitag Pro or AES-encrypted chips. Programming through the WCM/RFH (Radio Frequency Hub) via OBD-II. $225-$300.

What Is a Fobik Key?
Fobik is Stellantis' proprietary key format that combines a transponder and remote into one unit. Unlike traditional keys where the remote is separate from the blade, the Fobik has no blade at all. It's shaped like a thick credit card with buttons on it. You slide it into a slot on the dashboard or steering column. The vehicle reads the transponder and starts the engine.
The Fobik communicates with the SKREEM module (on older models) or WCM (on newer models). These modules manage key authentication and remote functions. When we program a new Fobik, we register its unique ID with the SKREEM/WCM through OBD-II. The vehicle accepts up to 8 registered Fobik keys.
There IS a hidden emergency key blade inside most Fobik units. Press a small release button and a thin key slides out. This opens the driver's door manually if the battery dies (fob or vehicle). Most people don't know it's there.

What Is the SKREEM/WCM Module?
SKREEM (Sentry Key Remote Entry Electronic Module) and WCM (Wireless Control Module) are Stellantis' names for the module that authenticates keys. SKREEM was used on 2008-2016 models. WCM replaced it on 2017+ models. Same function, different hardware generation. These modules store the registered key IDs and communicate with the PCM to enable engine start. When we program a new Fobik or proximity fob, we're writing to this module.
Can Older Jeeps/Dodges Self-Program Keys?
No. Unlike Ford and GM, Stellantis/FCA vehicles have never supported a consumer self-programming procedure. All key programming on Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD-II port. There's no two-key trick. Even dealer service advisors use the same OBD-II approach we do.
