Key Fob Programming
$75 - $200 | 15-30 minutes | Available 24/7
Triton Locksmith programs key fobs to your vehicle for $75-$200. If you bought a fob online, have one that stopped working after a battery change, or got a used fob, we connect to your car's OBD-II port and register it. Takes 15-30 minutes at your location. Programming only, no fob hardware included at this price.
When Do You Need Key Fob Programming?
When you have a fob that isn't paired to your car. The most common scenarios:
- Bought a replacement fob online: Amazon, eBay, or an auto parts store. The fob hardware is correct but it's not registered to your car. It won't lock, unlock, or start anything until we program it.
- Fob stopped working after a battery change: Some vehicles lose fob pairing when the battery is removed from the fob. Especially common on certain Hyundai/Kia and older Nissan models.
- Got a used fob from a junkyard or eBay: It was programmed to a different vehicle. We erase the old vehicle data and register it to yours.
- Fob stopped responding for no apparent reason: The internal circuitry may have desynced from the car's receiver. Reprogramming re-establishes the connection.
- Vehicle battery was disconnected: Some cars lose all fob registrations when the 12V battery is disconnected for extended periods. All fobs need reprogramming.
How Does Key Fob Programming Actually Work?
We plug into your car's OBD-II diagnostic port and use specialized software to register the fob's unique ID to your vehicle's receiver module. Here's the step-by-step:
- Connect to the OBD-II port: Every vehicle from 1996 onward has a 16-pin diagnostic port, usually under the driver's side dashboard. We plug in our Autel IM608 Pro or Xtool programmer.
- Access the Body Control Module (BCM): The BCM manages the vehicle's remote keyless entry system. We navigate to the key/fob management section.
- Put the vehicle in programming mode: The diagnostic tool sends a command to the BCM telling it to accept new fob registrations.
- Register the new fob: We hold the fob near the car (or press buttons in a specific sequence). The BCM reads the fob's unique ID and adds it to its authorized list.
- Test all functions: Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic alarm. On proximity fobs, we also test walk-up detection and push-to-start. Everything must work before we call it done.
Our Autel IM608 Pro supports fob programming for over 3,000 vehicle models from 80+ manufacturers. For vehicles the Autel doesn't cover, we carry Xtool and Smart Pro programmers as backup. Between the three, we handle virtually every car on the road.
Can Some Vehicles Self-Program Key Fobs?
Some older ones, yes. Certain 1998-2013 Ford, GM, and Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles allow self-programming through a specific key-cycle procedure. You turn the ignition key on-off-on in a timed sequence, the vehicle enters programming mode, and you press buttons on the new fob.
But this only works if you already have two working keys. If you have one key or zero keys, the self-programming procedure won't work and you need professional equipment. Also, vehicles from 2014 onward almost universally require diagnostic tool programming. The self-programming era is mostly over.
If you want to try self-programming first (it's free), call us and we'll tell you if your specific vehicle supports it. If it doesn't work, we'll come out and handle it professionally.
How Much Does Key Fob Programming Cost?
$75-$200 for programming only (you supply the fob).
- Standard remote fob (lock/unlock/trunk): $75-$125
- Remote head key with transponder: $100-$150 (transponder + remote programming)
- Smart proximity fob (push-to-start): $125-$200 (proximity detection + push-start + remote buttons)
- Additional fob (same visit): $25-$50 per extra fob
If you need us to supply the fob hardware too, see our key fob replacement service ($125-$350 including hardware + programming).
What's a Rolling Code and Why Does It Matter for Fob Programming?
A rolling code means the fob sends a different encrypted signal every time you press a button. First-generation car remotes (1990s) used fixed codes. Press the lock button and it always sent the same signal. A thief with a $30 code grabber could record that signal and replay it to open your car. Rolling codes made that attack impossible.
With rolling codes, the fob and car synchronize a mathematical sequence. Each button press advances to the next number. The car expects the next number in sequence. If someone records and replays an old transmission, the car rejects it because it's already moved past that number. According to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), modern rolling code algorithms produce 4.3 billion possible codes before repeating. That's why proper programming through the OBD-II port is required. The fob and car need to establish their shared sequence.
Can You Program a Used Fob from Another Vehicle?
For many brands, yes. We erase the previous vehicle's registration data and program the fob to your car. The fob needs to be the correct part number for your year, make, and model. A Toyota RAV4 fob won't work on a Toyota Camry even though they're both Toyotas. The part numbers are different.
Used fobs from junkyards can save money on the hardware cost. You pay us only for programming ($75-$200) instead of hardware + programming ($125-$350). Just make sure the part number matches before buying. Call us with your VIN and we'll confirm the correct OEM part number.
How Many Fobs Can Be Programmed to One Car?
Most vehicles support 4-8 registered fobs. We can add a new fob without deactivating your existing ones. All registered fobs work simultaneously. If you want to erase old fobs (like a fob from a previous owner), we can do that during the same programming session. It's an all-or-nothing process on most vehicles. When we enter programming mode, the car erases all existing fobs and re-registers only the ones physically present. So bring all your working fobs to the appointment.

Common Questions
How much does fob programming cost?
$75-$125 for standard remote fobs. $125-$200 for smart proximity fobs. This is programming only. If you need us to supply the fob too, see our fob replacement service.
Can I buy a fob online and have you program it?
Yes, but be careful. Make sure it's the correct part number for your exact year, make, and model. Amazon fobs are often generic or incorrect. If you're unsure, call us first and we'll tell you the right part number.
Why did my fob stop working after a battery change?
Some vehicles lose the fob pairing when the battery is removed. Others just need a reset cycle. We can reprogram it in about 15 minutes. It's a common issue.
Can you program a used fob from another vehicle?
For most vehicles, yes. We erase the old vehicle's data and program it to yours. The fob just needs to be the correct model for your car.
How many fobs can be programmed to one car?
Most vehicles support 4-8 fobs. We can program multiple fobs in the same visit. Each additional fob is $25-$50 for the programming.
Can Triton Locksmith program a key fob I bought online?
Possibly. Aftermarket fobs work for many vehicles but not all. Some manufacturers require OEM fobs. Call us with your vehicle make, model, and year and we will confirm compatibility before you buy.
How much does key fob programming cost?
Programming only (you provide the fob): $75-$150. Fob + programming: $150-$350. Depends on the vehicle make and whether the fob is OEM or aftermarket.
Can you program a key fob without going to the dealer?
Yes. Triton Locksmith programs key fobs on-site using professional diagnostic tools. No dealer visit, no towing, no waiting. We come to you.
What vehicles can Triton Locksmith program key fobs for?
Most domestic and import vehicles from 1996 to present. Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes, and more. Call with your specific vehicle for confirmation.
How many key fobs can my car support?
Most vehicles support 4-8 programmed fobs. Some luxury vehicles support more. When programming a new fob, all existing fobs must be present to prevent lockout of previously programmed keys.
