What Is a Key Fob and How Does It Work?
A key fob is the remote device that locks, unlocks, and sometimes starts your car. Some fobs are separate from the key (a small remote you press buttons on). Others are integrated into the key head (remote head key). And newer proximity fobs don't have a traditional blade at all. You carry them in your pocket and the car unlocks when you approach, then starts with a push button.
Inside every fob is a small radio transmitter that sends a unique rolling code to your car's receiver module. Each button press generates a new encrypted code from a mathematical sequence. The car checks the code against its expected sequence. If it matches, the car responds (locks, unlocks, opens trunk, sounds panic alarm). If it doesn't match, nothing happens.
This is why you can't just buy a fob on Amazon and expect it to work. The hardware might be correct, but without programming the fob's unique ID to your specific vehicle's receiver, the car ignores it completely. That's where we come in.
How Much Does Key Fob Replacement Cost by Vehicle Type?
$125-$350 depending on the vehicle and fob type.
- Basic remote fob (separate from key, older vehicles): $125-$175. Common on 2000-2012 Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy. Just the remote buttons, no blade.
- Remote head key (buttons built into key head): $150-$225. The key blade and remote are one piece. Common on 2006-2018 most brands.
- Integrated transponder + remote fob: $175-$250. Blade with chip plus remote buttons. Needs both transponder programming and remote pairing.
- Smart proximity fob (push-to-start): $250-$350. No traditional blade (or a hidden emergency blade inside). Stays in your pocket. Proximity detection unlocks doors when you approach.
Dealer pricing for the same fobs: $200-$500+. Plus 3-7 days to order the part. Plus you need to bring the car to the dealer for programming. We carry the most popular fob blanks in the van and program at your location in one visit. No tow, no appointment, no waiting.

Luxury brand fobs (BMW, Mercedes, Audi/VW) are sometimes ordered same-day if we don't have the exact model in stock. Call ahead and we'll confirm availability for your specific vehicle.
Can You Replace Just the Fob Case If the Electronics Still Work?
Yes. If your fob's buttons still work but the case is cracked, the key loop is broken, or buttons are worn smooth, we can swap the circuit board and battery into a new shell. Case-only replacement runs $40-$75. Much cheaper than a full fob replacement. Common on Honda, Toyota, and Nissan fobs where the plastic cracks after a few years of pocket wear.
We also replace fob batteries for $10-$15 if that's all it needs. Most fobs use CR2032 or CR2450 coin cell batteries. If your fob's range has decreased (you have to be closer to the car for it to respond) or the buttons need multiple presses, try a battery first before assuming the fob is dead.
What Happens If You Lose Your Only Key Fob?
We replace it from scratch. No existing fob needed. We access the vehicle's receiver module through the OBD-II port, register a new fob, and program all functions (lock, unlock, trunk, panic, proximity if applicable). This is the "all keys lost" scenario and costs $25-$75 more than adding an additional fob because of the extra diagnostic steps.
If you still have one working fob and want a spare, that's easier and cheaper. We recommend every driver have at least 2 programmed fobs. The spare fob costs $75-$200 and eliminates the $250-$350 emergency replacement if you lose your only one.
Can You Program a Fob Bought Online?
If it's the correct part number for your vehicle, usually yes. But be careful. Amazon and eBay fobs are often wrong part numbers, off-brand clones, or used fobs from other vehicles. Call us first with your year, make, model, and trim level. We'll tell you the exact OEM part number to buy. If the fob you bought is wrong, it can't be programmed and you're out the money. See our key fob programming service for programming-only pricing ($75-$200).

Common Questions
Can you replace a key fob without going to the dealer?
Yes. That's exactly what we do. We carry fob blanks, cut any necessary blades, and program them to your car on-site. No dealer appointment, no tow, no waiting for parts.
How long does fob replacement take?
20-45 minutes. Basic fobs are faster. Proximity fobs with push-to-start take a bit longer due to the programming steps.
Will my old fob still work after you program a new one?
Usually yes. Most vehicles can have multiple fobs active at the same time. If you later find your old fob, it'll still work unless you specifically ask us to deactivate it.
Can you just replace the battery in my fob?
If that's all it needs, sure. Fob battery replacement is $10-$15. But if the fob case is cracked, buttons are worn, or the circuit board is damaged, replacement is better.
Do you carry fobs for all car brands?
We stock the most common ones (Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia). Luxury brand fobs (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) are sometimes ordered same-day. Call ahead and we'll confirm availability.
How much does a replacement key fob cost?
Standard remote fob: $75-$150. Proximity smart key: $150-$350. Luxury brand (BMW, Mercedes, Audi): $200-$500. Triton Locksmith pricing is 40-60% less than dealership.
Can I get a replacement fob without going to the dealer?
Yes. Triton Locksmith provides OEM and quality aftermarket fobs programmed on-site. Same functionality as the dealer at significantly lower cost.
Do I need all existing fobs present when programming a new one?
For most vehicles, yes. All existing fobs must be present during programming or they will be deactivated. Triton Locksmith reprograms all fobs during the same visit.
How long does key fob replacement take?
20-40 minutes on-site. We cut the emergency key blade (if applicable), program the fob to your vehicle, and test all functions before leaving.
Can you replace a fob for a push-to-start vehicle?
Yes. Proximity key fobs for push-to-start vehicles are our specialty. We program the fob to communicate with your vehicle's immobilizer and start system.
