Smart Key / Push-to-Start
$200 - $450 | 30-60 minutes | Available 24/7
Triton Locksmith replaces and programs smart keys (proximity/push-to-start fobs) for $200-$450. The fob stays in your pocket. The car detects it, unlocks automatically, and starts with a button press. We program on-site for all major brands in 30-60 minutes. No dealer trip needed.
What Is a Smart Key / Push-to-Start System?
A proximity key fob that communicates with the car wirelessly so you never insert a key. You walk up to the car with the fob in your pocket or bag. The car senses it within 3-5 feet using low-frequency radio (125 kHz). The doors unlock. You get inside, press the start button, and the engine fires. No key slot, no ignition cylinder, no turning anything.
The system uses two radio frequencies. Low-frequency (125 kHz) handles proximity detection: is the fob near the car? High-frequency (315 MHz or 433 MHz, depending on brand) handles the lock/unlock/trunk buttons you press on the fob. Both use encrypted rolling codes that change with every interaction. If the codes match, the car responds. If the fob is missing, dead, or not registered, nothing happens.
Smart key systems have become the standard on most new vehicles. According to J.D. Power, over 90% of new vehicles sold in 2025 used push-button start with proximity key systems. If you've bought a car in the last 5 years, you probably have one.

How Does Triton Locksmith Program a Smart Key?
We connect to the vehicle's OBD-II port, access the smart key module, and register the new fob. Smart key programming is more involved than standard transponder key programming because the system manages both proximity detection and push-to-start authorization. Here's what we do:
- Connect our Autel IM608 Pro to the OBD-II port
- Access the Body Control Module (BCM) or Smart Key ECU (depending on brand)
- Read the current key registration data
- Put the system in registration mode
- Register the new fob's unique ID for proximity detection
- Register the fob for push-to-start authorization
- Register remote functions (lock, unlock, trunk, panic)
- Test walk-up unlock: approach the car with the fob, doors should unlock automatically
- Test push-to-start: foot on brake, press button, engine fires
- Test all remote buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic alarm
Some brands (notably Mercedes 2020+ and some BMW models) require an online server connection during programming. Our diagnostic tools have cellular connectivity for this. We handle the server handshake at your location. You don't need Wi-Fi or a dealership.
What If My Smart Key Battery Dies?
Every smart key has a backup method. Here's what to do:
- To unlock the door: Most smart fobs have a hidden physical key blade inside. Press a small release button on the fob and the blade slides out. Use it on the driver's door lock cylinder (sometimes hidden behind a cap on the door handle).
- To start the car: Hold the dead fob directly against the start button (or a designated spot on the dash/center console). The car's NFC reader will detect the fob at close range even with a dead battery and allow you to start.
- To fix it permanently: Replace the battery. Most smart fobs use a CR2032 or CR2450 coin cell. $10-$15. We do it on-site or you can do it yourself with a small flathead screwdriver to pry the fob open.
Can You Replace a Smart Key If All Keys Are Lost?
Yes. That's actually the most common reason people call us for smart key service. You lost your only fob. The car is sitting in the driveway, locked, with no way to start it. We come to you, access the vehicle (using our lockout tools if the doors are locked), connect to the OBD-II port, register a new fob from scratch, and you're driving again in under an hour.
All-keys-lost smart key replacement costs $25-$75 more than adding a spare because we need to read the immobilizer data from scratch and initialize a new fob. Still dramatically cheaper than the dealer.
How Many Smart Keys Can My Car Support?
Most vehicles support 4-8 registered smart keys. We can add your new key without deactivating existing ones. If you want to erase old keys (from a previous owner, lost fob, etc.), we can do that during the same session. When erasing keys, bring all working fobs to the appointment because the car re-registers everything at once.
We always recommend having at least 2 smart keys. The cost of a spare smart key ($175-$300) is 30-50% less than the emergency all-keys-lost replacement you'll need if you lose your only one.

Smart Key / Push-to-Start Questions
How much does smart key replacement cost?
$200-$300 for mainstream brands (Honda, Toyota, Ford, Nissan). $300-$450 for luxury brands (BMW, Mercedes, Audi). Includes the fob hardware, programming, and testing.
Can you replace a smart key without the dealer?
Yes. We handle full smart key replacement on-site for virtually every make and model. Our diagnostic tools have the same capabilities as dealer equipment for key programming.
What if my smart key battery dies?
Use the hidden physical key blade to unlock the door. Hold the dead fob against the start button to start the engine via NFC. Then replace the battery (CR2032 or CR2450, $10-$15). We do battery swaps on-site.
Can you program a used smart key from another car?
For many brands yes. We erase the old vehicle data and register the fob to your car. The fob must be the correct part number for your year, make, model, and trim. Call us to verify compatibility before buying used.
How long does smart key programming take?
30-60 minutes at your location. Mainstream brands are faster. Luxury brands with server-based programming (Mercedes, some BMW) take longer due to the online verification step.
Will my old smart key still work after you program a new one?
Usually yes. Adding a new key doesn't deactivate existing ones on most vehicles. If you want old keys erased (stolen fob, previous owner's key), we can do that specifically during the programming session.
How many smart keys can my car have?
Most vehicles support 4-8 registered smart keys. We can add a new one without deactivating your existing keys. We recommend having at least 2 programmed fobs.
Is a locksmith smart key the same as a dealer smart key?
Functionally identical. Proximity unlocks the doors, push button starts the engine, remote buttons work. The key operates exactly like a dealer key. Same signal, same encryption, same functions.
Can someone steal my car by copying my smart key signal?
Relay attacks (amplifying the fob signal from inside your house) have been reported but they're rare. Prevention: store your fob in a signal-blocking pouch (Faraday bag) at night. Some newer vehicles have motion-sensor fobs that go to sleep when stationary.
Do you service Tesla smart keys?
We program Tesla key cards and help with key fob pairing for Model S and X. Phone key setup goes through the Tesla app. We can assist with the initial pairing and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
