What Tesla Key Options Exist?

Key cards, key fobs, and phone keys. Model 3 and Model Y use NFC key cards as the primary backup to the phone key. Model S and Model X use a traditional-style Bluetooth key fob. All Teslas support phone-as-key through the Tesla app.

How Tesla Keys Work (Differently from Every Other Car)

Tesla does not use traditional car keys. There is no ignition cylinder, no transponder chip, and no mechanical key blade (except for a hidden emergency release on some models). Tesla uses three types of electronic keys:

• Phone key (primary): The Tesla app on your smartphone communicates with the car via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). When you walk up to the car with your phone, it unlocks automatically. When you press the brake with your phone nearby, the car starts. No physical key needed.
• Key card (backup): A credit-card-sized NFC card. You tap it on the B-pillar (between the front and rear doors) to unlock, then place it on the center console to start the car. Model 3 and Model Y ship with two key cards.
• Key fob (optional on Model 3/Y, standard on Model S/X): A Bluetooth fob shaped like a miniature Tesla. Works like a traditional key fob: press to lock/unlock, double-click to open the trunk. Model S and Model X include one with the car.

Tesla Key Card Programming

Adding a new key card to a Tesla requires access to the vehicle touchscreen and an existing authenticated key. Triton Locksmith assists with the pairing process on-site. If you have lost all keys and cannot authenticate, Tesla roadside assistance or a Tesla Service Center may need to provide initial access before we can program the new card. Once we have touchscreen access, adding a key card takes about 5 minutes.

Tesla allows up to 19 keys (phone keys, key cards, and key fobs combined) to be paired to a single vehicle. Triton Locksmith recommends keeping at least two key cards as backup in addition to your phone key.
