What Toyota Key Systems Does Triton Locksmith Program?
Toyota has used five generations of transponder chip technology. Each uses different encryption and requires different programming approaches. Here's the technical breakdown by chip type:
- 4C chip (fixed code, 1998-2003): The first generation. Used on early Camry, Corolla, Sienna, and Avalon. Fixed transponder code that can be directly cloned. Simplest to program. Blade blank: TOY43. $120-$140.
- 4D chip (crypto, 2003-2010): Texas Instruments 4D67/4D68. Rolling code encryption. Used on Camry (2003-2011), Corolla (2003-2013), RAV4 (2006-2012), Tacoma (2005-2015), 4Runner (2003-2009). Requires OBD-II programming to register with the immobilizer ECU. Blade blank: TOY43. $130-$160.
- G chip (2010-2014): Toyota's proprietary chip with DST80 encryption. Used on Camry (2012-2014), Corolla (2009-2013), RAV4 (2013-2015), Prius (2010-2015). G-chip requires a specific registration protocol through the smart key ECU. More complex than 4D. $140-$175.
- H chip (2014-2019): Enhanced version of the G chip with additional security layers. Used on Camry (2015-2017), Corolla (2014-2019), RAV4 (2016-2018), Highlander (2014-2019), Tacoma (2016-2019). Requires reading the IMMO box data. $150-$200.
- 8A chip / Hitag Pro AES (2018+): Toyota's newest system using Philips/NXP 8A with AES-128 encryption. Used on Camry (2018+), Corolla (2020+), RAV4 (2019+), Highlander (2020+), Tacoma (2020+), Tundra (2022+). The hardest Toyota chip to program. Many locksmiths can't handle 8A. Our Autel IM608 Pro and Smart Pro both support it. $175-$275.
We also program Toyota Smart Key proximity fobs (push-to-start) on all models that use them. The Smart Key system uses 125 kHz for proximity detection and 315 MHz for remote functions, similar to other brands but with Toyota-specific registration protocols.

How Does Triton Locksmith Program a Toyota Key?
We connect to the OBD-II port and register the new key with the immobilizer ECU. Toyota stores key data in a dedicated immobilizer module (IMMO box) that communicates with the engine ECU. Here's the process:
- Connect Autel IM608 Pro to OBD-II port
- Identify the chip type (4C, 4D, G, H, or 8A) and security protocol
- Read the IMMO box data
- Generate the new key's transponder data
- Write the data to the blank key chip
- Register the key ID with the IMMO box and engine ECU
- Test: engine starts, doors lock/unlock, Smart Key proximity works (if applicable)
For 8A chip (2018+ models), the programming requires additional security steps because of the AES-128 encryption. Many locksmiths' older tools can't handle 8A. We invested in the Autel IM608 Pro and Smart Pro specifically because they support 8A programming. If another locksmith told you they can't do your newer Toyota, call us.
Can You Make a Toyota Key Without the Original?
Yes. We decode the door lock using Lishi TOY43 or TOY48 picks, cut the blade from the decode, and program the chip from scratch through the OBD-II port. No existing key needed. All-keys-lost Toyota replacement is one of our most common calls.
Do You Service Lexus and Scion Too?
Yes. Lexus is Toyota's luxury division and uses identical key technology. Same chips, same IMMO box, same programming. Lexus keys cost slightly more because the fob housing is more expensive, but the process is identical. Scion (discontinued) used Toyota chips as well.
