What Is an Electric Strike and How Does It Work?

An electric strike replaces the standard metal strike plate in your door frame. When it receives an electrical signal (from a button, intercom, or access control reader), the strike pivots open and allows the door to push open without turning the handle. Release the signal and the strike returns to locked position.

Electric strikes work with your existing lock hardware. You don't need to replace the lock itself. The strike does the remote release while the mechanical lock still provides physical security when the system is at rest.

What Is an Electric Strike?

An electric strike replaces the standard door strike plate with a motorized version that releases when triggered. When the strike is energized (or de-energized, depending on the model), the strike keeper pivots open and allows the door to push open without turning the handle or retracting the latch. The mechanical lock still works normally for keyed entry.

Electric strikes are the most common way to add remote door release to an existing commercial door. They work with access control systems, intercoms, and buzzer systems. When someone badges in or gets buzzed in, the electric strike releases and the door opens.

Types of Electric Strikes

  • Fail-secure (locked on power loss): The strike stays locked when power is cut. Requires power to unlock. Used on exterior doors, server rooms, and any door that must stay secured during a power outage.
  • Fail-safe (unlocked on power loss): The strike releases when power is cut. Requires power to stay locked. Used on fire exit doors and any door where fire code requires free egress during emergencies.
  • Monitored: Built-in sensor reports whether the door is open or closed and whether the strike is locked or unlocked. Integrates with security systems for door position monitoring.

Electric Strike Installation Process

Step 1: Frame prep. Triton Locksmith removes the existing strike plate and enlarges the frame pocket to accept the electric strike body. For hollow metal frames, we use a nibbler tool. For wood frames, a chisel. The pocket must be precise for proper latch alignment.

Step 2: Wiring. Low-voltage wire (16-22 gauge) runs from the electric strike to the power source. For access control systems, the wire goes to the control panel. For intercoms, to the controller. Triton Locksmith conceals all wiring inside the wall or in surface-mount conduit.

Step 3: Test. Triton Locksmith verifies the strike releases properly, the door latches when released, and the fail mode works as specified. We also test the fire alarm release connection if applicable.

Why Businesses Choose Electric Strikes

Electric strikes are the most cost-effective way to add electronic access to an existing commercial door. Compared to magnetic locks ($250-$500), electric strikes are similar in price ($200-$350) but maintain mechanical lock function as backup. If the electronics fail, the door still locks with the key. This redundancy makes electric strikes the preferred choice for most commercial applications in Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach.

Electric strikes also offer the most flexibility in fail mode selection. Fail-secure for exterior doors that must stay locked during outages. Fail-safe for fire exits that must release during emergencies. Triton Locksmith helps you select the correct fail mode for each door based on fire code and security requirements.

Common Questions

How much does an electric strike cost installed?

Standard HES 1006: $200-$350. Heavy-duty HES 9600: $350-$500. Storefront Adams Rite: $250-$400. Includes strike, wiring, and testing.

What is the difference between fail-secure and fail-safe?

Fail-secure stays locked when power is lost. Fail-safe unlocks when power is lost. Fire code determines which type is required for each door.

Can you add an electric strike to my existing door?

Yes. We replace the standard strike plate with an electric strike. Requires cutting the frame pocket slightly larger and running low-voltage wire to the power source.

Does an electric strike work with my existing lock?

Yes. The mechanical lock stays in place and works normally with a key. The electric strike simply allows the door to open without retracting the latch when triggered.

How does an electric strike connect to an intercom?

Low-voltage wire runs from the intercom control unit to the electric strike. When you press the release button on the intercom (or app), the strike opens for 5-10 seconds.

Can an electric strike integrate with access control?

Yes. The strike connects to the access control panel. When a valid card or fob is presented, the panel energizes the strike. This is the most common access control door setup.

Do electric strikes need a battery backup?

Recommended for fail-safe strikes that must release during power outages. Fail-secure strikes stay locked without power, so backup is less critical. Triton Locksmith installs UPS units for critical doors.

How long does electric strike installation take?

2-4 hours for a single door including frame prep, strike installation, wiring, and testing. Add 1-2 hours if connecting to access control or intercom.

Can you install an electric strike on a metal door frame?

Yes. Metal frames (hollow metal or aluminum) are the most common electric strike application. We cut the frame pocket with specialized tools for a clean fit.

What is a monitored electric strike?

A strike with a built-in sensor that reports door position (open/closed) and strike status (locked/unlocked) to the security system. Useful for door-held-open alerts and audit trails.
