File Cabinet & Desk Locks
$45 - $120 | 15-30 minutes | Available 24/7
Triton Locksmith open, repair, and replace locks on filing cabinets, desk drawers, and office furniture for $45-$120. Lost the key? No problem. We pick the lock, make a new key, or replace the cylinder on the spot.
What Office Furniture Locks Does Triton Locksmith Service?
Filing cabinets, desk drawers, credenzas, lateral files, pedestal files, and office storage units. Most use cam locks or wafer locks that Triton Locksmith can pick open in under 5 minutes. We carry replacement cylinders for all major office furniture brands.
The most common call is someone who inherited an office and doesn't have the key to the file cabinet. We open it, decode the lock, and cut a new key that works. Takes about 15 minutes from arrival to handing you a working key.
Brands Triton Locksmith Services
- HON: The most common filing cabinet in South Florida offices. Uses standard cam locks with CH751 or proprietary HON keys. We carry replacement locks and blanks.
- Steelcase: Higher-end office furniture with proprietary lock cylinders. We carry Steelcase replacement cores and can decode/cut keys for all Steelcase filing cabinets and lateral files.
- Herman Miller: Premium office furniture found in corporate environments. Uses tubular cam locks on most models. We stock replacements.
- Haworth, Knoll, Global: All use standard cam lock profiles that we service daily.
- FireKing, SentrySafe, Schwab: Fireproof filing cabinets with standard cam locks. The fire rating is in the cabinet shell, not the lock. We service the lock without affecting the fire protection.
Can You Make a Key Without the Original?
Yes. Triton Locksmith decodes the lock and cuts a key from scratch. Office furniture locks use simple wafer mechanisms that can be read with an impressioning tool or visual decoding technique. Once we have the code, we cut the key on a standard machine. No drilling, no damage to the cabinet or lock.
If the lock is too worn or damaged to decode, we replace the cam cylinder entirely. Replacement cylinders for filing cabinets cost $15-$30 for the part. You get two fresh keys with the new lock.
Many office furniture manufacturers stamp a key code on the lock face or inside the drawer. If you can find that code, we can cut the key directly from the code without even picking the lock. Check for a 3-4 digit number stamped into the lock face or on the back of the cam.
Types of Office Furniture Locks
Not all cabinet locks are the same. Understanding what type you have helps Triton Locksmith bring the right tools and parts on the first visit:
- Cam locks (most common): A flat metal bar rotates to lock/unlock the drawer. Found on 80% of filing cabinets. Easiest to service, replace, and key-alike.
- Plunger locks (push locks): Found on sliding glass doors on bookcases and display cases. Push in to lock, turn the key to unlock. We replace these with upgraded cylinders when the original wears out.
- Tubular locks: Round key with a tubular pattern. Found on Herman Miller and some Steelcase products. Slightly more secure than cam locks. We pick these with tubular pick tools.
- Wafer disc locks: Found on desk drawers and credenzas. Simple mechanism, easy to decode, quick to replace. Most common in HON and Global furniture.
- Gang lock bars: A single lock secures all drawers in a vertical file cabinet through a metal rod. The rod prevents any drawer from opening when locked. If the lock fails, all drawers are stuck. We remove the bar lock and replace it same-visit.
Can You Key All Our Cabinets to One Key?
Yes, if the cabinets use the same lock type. This is called "keying alike" and is one of our most popular office services. We replace or rekey all the cam locks to match a single key. Office managers love this because it eliminates the ring of 15 different cabinet keys.
For larger offices, we can set up a master key system where each department has its own cabinet key, but a master key opens everything. This gives department managers access to their own files while giving the office manager or compliance officer access to all cabinets.
HIPAA and SOX Compliance: Securing Sensitive Documents
Medical offices and financial firms have legal obligations to secure physical records. HIPAA requires that protected health information (PHI) in paper form be stored in locked containers when not actively supervised. SOX compliance requires restricted access to financial records.
Triton Locksmith upgrades standard cam locks to higher-security tubular or plunger locks that resist casual picking. For medical and legal offices in Boca Raton, Coral Springs, and Fort Lauderdale, we provide documentation of the lock installation for your compliance records.

Common Questions
How much does it cost to open a locked file cabinet?
$45-$65 for standard cam lock cabinets. $65-$90 for high-security file cabinets with tubular or dimple key locks. Triton Locksmith can usually make a working key during the same visit.
Can you open a file cabinet without breaking it?
Yes. We pick the lock non-destructively in 95%+ of cases. No drilling, no prying. The cabinet and lock are unharmed and fully functional after we open it.
Do you sell replacement file cabinet locks?
Yes. We carry cam locks and key cylinders for HON, Steelcase, Herman Miller, and most other brands on the van. Replacement runs $15-$30 for the part plus labor.
Can you key all our file cabinets to one key?
If they use the same lock type, yes. We replace or rekey all the cam locks to match a single key. Very popular with office managers who are tired of carrying a ring of different cabinet keys.
What brands of file cabinets can you service?
HON, Steelcase, Herman Miller, Haworth, Global, Knoll, FireKing, SentrySafe, Schwab, and most other office furniture brands. We carry common replacement parts on our service van.
Can you make a file cabinet key without the original?
Yes. We decode the lock using impressioning or visual decoding and cut a key from scratch. No original key needed. If a key code is stamped on the lock, we can cut directly from that code.
Do you upgrade file cabinet locks to high-security?
Yes. We replace standard cam locks with tubular locks or plunger locks for documents requiring HIPAA or SOX compliance-level physical security. We provide installation documentation for your compliance records.
How long does it take to open a locked desk drawer?
5-15 minutes for most desk locks. Wafer and cam locks pick quickly. Tubular locks take slightly longer. We make a new key on the spot so you have full access going forward.
Can you rekey a filing cabinet to match our office door key?
Only if both use the same keyway type, which is uncommon. File cabinets typically use cam or wafer locks while doors use pin tumbler cylinders. We can key all cabinets to match each other though.
Do you service fireproof filing cabinets?
Yes. FireKing, Schwab, SentrySafe, and other fireproof cabinet brands. These use standard cam locks that we can pick, decode, and replace. The fire rating is in the cabinet shell, not the lock, so our work does not affect fire protection.
