Master Key Systems

$200 - $800 | 2-4 hours | Available 24/7

Quick Answer

Triton Locksmith designs and installs commercial master key systems for $200-$800. Grand master opens everything, sub-masters open departments/floors, individual keys open one door each. We design the pin chart, repin every cylinder, and cut all keys on-site same day. Buildings up to 200+ doors. No new lock hardware needed.

How Does a Commercial Master Key System Work?

Multiple levels of key access, all controlled by pin configuration inside existing lock cylinders. Each lock gets a master wafer added between the key pins and driver pins, creating two shear lines. The individual key matches one shear line (opens only that door). The master key matches the second (opens every door in its group). Same lock hardware, different internal pin arrangement.

A commercial master key system can have multiple levels:

  • Grand Master Key (GMK): Opens every lock in the entire building. Held by the building owner or property manager.
  • Master Keys (MK): Opens all locks within a specific group (one floor, one wing, one department). Held by floor managers or department heads.
  • Sub-Master Keys (SMK): Opens a subset within a master group. For example, maintenance gets a sub-master for mechanical rooms only.
  • Individual/Change Keys (CK): Opens only one specific door. Each tenant, employee, or room gets their own.

We design the key hierarchy before touching a single lock. For a 50-door office building, the pin chart needs careful mathematical planning to avoid cross-keying (where an individual key accidentally opens a door it shouldn't). This is where experience matters. A poorly designed chart creates security holes. We've designed systems for buildings with over 200 doors and zero cross-keying incidents.

Who Needs a Commercial Master Key System?

Any building where different people need different levels of door access. The most common commercial applications:

  • Multi-tenant office buildings: Building manager gets GMK. Each tenant company gets their own CK. Cleaning crew gets a sub-master for common areas after hours.
  • Medical/dental offices: Front desk staff opens exam rooms. Doctors open the pharmacy/medication cabinet. Office manager opens everything. Different access levels for different roles.
  • Property management companies: Managing 20 rental units? One master key opens every unit for inspections, maintenance, and emergencies. Each tenant gets individual keys. When they move out, you rekey the unit and repin to fit the existing master.
  • Schools and universities: Administration opens everything. Teachers open their classrooms and common areas. Custodial staff opens mechanical rooms. Students open nothing (they get access cards instead).
  • Retail centers and strip malls: Center management opens all common areas and exterior doors. Each store has their own individual key. Maintenance has a sub-master for HVAC and electrical rooms.
  • HOA common areas: Board members get a master. Residents get pool/gym access. Maintenance gets everything.

According to ASIS International, access management (including key control) is one of the top 5 physical security measures for commercial properties. A well-designed master key system eliminates the chaos of everyone having copies of the same key.

How Much Does a Commercial Master Key System Cost?

$200-$800 for most commercial properties. Custom quotes for 50+ doors.

  • Small office (5-10 doors): $200-$350
  • Medium office (10-25 doors): $350-$550
  • Multi-tenant building (25-50 doors): $550-$800
  • Large commercial property (50+ doors): Custom quote based on hierarchy complexity
  • Adding a new lock to an existing system: $45-$65 per lock

The price includes: pin chart design, repinning every cylinder, cutting all master and individual keys, documenting the system, and testing every lock. We don't charge separately for design and labor. One price covers everything.

What Lock Brands Work with Master Key Systems?

All standard pin tumbler commercial locks. We typically standardize a building on one brand for best results:

  • Schlage (SC1/SC4 keyway): Most common commercial brand. Excellent master key expandability.
  • Corbin Russwin (6-pin): Higher security option. More pin positions = more possible combinations = larger systems without cross-keying.
  • Sargent: Common in institutional buildings (hospitals, schools).
  • Best/Falcon (IC core): Interchangeable core systems where the entire core swaps in seconds. Excellent for buildings that rekey frequently.
  • Medeco / Mul-T-Lock: Restricted keyway master key systems where individual keys can't be copied at hardware stores. Maximum key control.

If your building has mixed brands, we may need to replace some cylinders to standardize the keyway. This is an additional cost but it's a one-time investment that makes the master key system work correctly.

How Long Does Commercial Master Key Installation Take?

2-8 hours depending on door count.

  • 5-10 doors: 2-3 hours
  • 10-25 doors: 3-5 hours
  • 25-50 doors: 5-8 hours (may be split over 2 visits)
  • 50+ doors: Full day or multiple days depending on complexity

We repin each cylinder on-site without removing the lock from the door. Your building stays operational during the process. We can schedule after business hours if you prefer zero disruption. Same price for evening or weekend installation.

What Happens If You Need to Add Doors Later?

We keep your pin chart on file permanently. When you add a new door (renovation, new tenant, new office), we pull up the chart and pin the new lock to fit the existing master key system. Takes about 20 minutes per additional lock. Call us and we come out same-day. The master key works on the new lock immediately.

This is why professional chart design matters. A well-designed system has expansion capacity built in. We plan for future growth so adding 10 more doors in 2 years doesn't require redesigning the entire system.

Common Questions

How much does a commercial master key system cost?

$200-$400 for small offices (5-15 doors). $400-$800 for multi-tenant buildings (15-50 doors). Custom quotes for larger properties. We price per lock plus a design fee for the key chart.

Can you master-key locks from different brands?

Within the same keyway family, yes. We typically standardize all locks to one brand (usually Schlage or Corbin Russwin) for best results. If you have mixed brands, we may need to replace some cylinders.

How long does installation take?

2-4 hours for a typical office. Larger buildings might take a full day. We repin each cylinder on-site. No locks need to be removed from the doors.

What happens if we add new doors later?

We keep your pin chart on file. When you add a door, we pin the new lock to fit the existing system. Call us and we'll come out same day.

Is a master key system less secure?

The master wafers create an additional shear line, which technically makes manipulation slightly easier. For an office environment, the risk is negligible. If maximum security is needed for specific doors, we can use restricted keyways on those locks.

Can you add restricted keyways to a master key system?

Yes. Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Abloy all support master key hierarchies with patented restricted blanks that cannot be copied at hardware stores or self-service kiosks.

How many levels can a master key system have?

Standard systems support 3-4 levels: grand master, master, sub-master, and individual change key. Larger systems can go deeper, but complexity increases cross-keying risk. Triton Locksmith designs charts with proper pin separation to prevent unintended access.

What is cross-keying and why should I care?

Cross-keying happens when an individual key accidentally opens a lock it shouldn't due to overlapping pin combinations. Poor chart design causes this. Professional chart design with proper pin separation and combination tracking eliminates the risk.

Can tenants copy their individual keys?

With standard keyways (Schlage, Kwikset), yes. With restricted keyways (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock), no. Restricted key blanks are patented and available only through authorized dealers with your authorization card.

Do you rekey master key systems when tenants move out?

Yes. We repin the individual cylinder to a new key while the master key continues to work. The outgoing tenant's key stops working immediately. See our tenant lock change service.
