What Keys Can Triton Locksmith Duplicate?

Standard house keys, mailbox keys, padlock keys, cabinet keys, and most residential lock keys. If it's a standard pin tumbler key (the kind with teeth on one side), we can copy it in under 5 minutes. We carry blank stock for Schlage SC1 and SC4, Kwikset KW1 and KW10, Yale, Weiser, Baldwin, Emtek, and dozens more.

Here's what we duplicate and the pricing for each:

  • Standard brass house key (Schlage, Kwikset, Yale): $5-$8 each. Cut in 3-5 minutes.
  • Mailbox key: $5-$10. Cam lock and tubular styles.
  • Padlock key: $5-$8. Standard and disc-style padlocks.
  • Cabinet/desk key: $5-$10. Small format keys.
  • Medeco restricted key: $15-$20. Authorization card required.
  • Mul-T-Lock restricted key: $20-$25. Authorization card required.
  • Abloy restricted key: $25-$35. Authorization card required.
  • Car key (metal only, no chip): $15-$25. Older vehicles without transponders.
  • Car key with transponder chip: See our car key duplication service ($65-$200).

High-security keys from Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Abloy can be duplicated, but only with your authorization card. These restricted keyways are patented. The blanks aren't available at hardware stores or kiosks. Only authorized dealers (like us) can source and cut them. That's the whole point of restricted key systems.

Why Get Keys Copied by a Locksmith Instead of a Kiosk?

Accuracy and reliability. Those self-service key kiosks at Home Depot and Walmart use automated cutting that's often slightly off. The key goes in the lock but sticks. Or it turns partway but not all the way. Or it works 9 times out of 10 but jams on the 10th. We've seen customers bring us kiosk-cut keys that don't work at all.

According to Consumer Reports' 2024 testing, self-service kiosk keys had a 15-20% failure rate on first use. Professional locksmith cuts had under 2%. The $2 you save at the kiosk isn't worth it when the key doesn't work and you're standing at your front door at 10 PM.

Our key machine is a professional-grade duplicator calibrated weekly. It reads the original key's bitting precisely and cuts the new blank to within 0.001 inches of tolerance. Every copy we make works the first time, every time. That's the difference between a $3 kiosk key and a $5 locksmith key.

Can You Make a Key Without the Original?

Yes, but that's a different service than duplication. Key duplication copies an existing key. If you have no key at all, we need to decode the lock and create a key from scratch. That's called "origination" or "impressioning" and costs $65-$150 depending on the lock type. See our home lockout service for situations where no key exists.

We can also cut keys by code. Many locks have a code number stamped on the original key or stored in a database by the manufacturer. If you can give us the code (or we can find it through the lock's serial number), we cut the key from the code without needing the original. Common with mailbox locks and padlocks.

What About "Do Not Duplicate" Keys?

The "Do Not Duplicate" stamp is a request, not a law. There is no federal or Florida statute that prohibits copying a key stamped "Do Not Duplicate." It's a voluntary restriction. Any locksmith or hardware store can legally copy it. The stamp is meant to deter casual copying, but it has no legal enforcement.

If you actually need to prevent key copying, you need a restricted keyway from Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, or Abloy. Those systems use patented key blanks that physically can't be cut without the authorized blank. That's real key control. "Do Not Duplicate" stamps are wishful thinking.

How Many Spare Keys Should You Have?

At minimum, 2 copies per person plus 1 spare stored safely. That means a couple should have 5 total: 2 for person A, 2 for person B, and 1 spare with a trusted neighbor or in a secure location (not under the doormat). Single person? 3 total: 2 for you, 1 spare.

We see lockout calls every week from people who had one key and lost it. One key is a single point of failure. When it's gone, you're calling us at $95-$150 for a lockout service instead of paying $5-$8 for a spare that would've prevented the whole situation. Spare keys are the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to copy a house key?

Standard brass keys run $5-$8 each. We can cut them at your location in about 5 minutes. Buy 4+ and we'll knock a dollar off each.

Can you copy a key that says 'Do Not Duplicate'?

Legally, yes. The 'Do Not Duplicate' stamp is a request, not a law. There's no federal or Florida statute that prohibits copying a key with that stamp. However, restricted keyways (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) physically can't be copied without authorization because the blanks aren't available.

Can you make a key from a lock without an original?

Yes. We can impression or decode the lock to create a key from scratch. That's a different service from duplication and costs more ($65-$150), but it works when you have zero existing keys.

Do you copy car keys too?

Yes. See our car key duplication page. Car keys with chips cost more because of the programming involved.

How much does key duplication cost?

Standard brass keys: $3-$5 each. High-security restricted keys: $15-$25 each. Transponder car keys: $75-$200. Triton Locksmith cuts keys on-site.

Can you duplicate a key marked Do Not Duplicate?

Yes. The DND stamp is a request, not a legal restriction. However, for restricted keyway keys (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock), duplication requires an authorization card from the lock owner.

Can you make a key from a lock without the original key?

Yes. Triton Locksmith decodes the lock and cuts a key from scratch using impressioning or code cutting. No original key needed.

Do you duplicate car keys?

Yes. Standard car keys, transponder keys, and key fobs. See our automotive locksmith services for car key duplication pricing.

Can you duplicate keys for padlocks?

Yes. Standard pin tumbler padlock keys duplicate on a standard key machine. Disc padlock keys and tubular keys require specialized equipment that Triton Locksmith carries.

How many copies of a key can you make at once?

As many as you need. We cut keys on-site from a mobile key machine. No limit on quantity. Volume pricing available for businesses needing 10+ copies.
