Master Key System
$150 - $500 | 1-3 hours | Available 24/7
Triton Locksmith designs and installs master key systems that let one key open every lock while individual keys only open their assigned door. We pin the system on-site for $150-$500 depending on the number of locks. No new hardware needed. We repin your existing cylinders.
How Does a Master Key System Actually Work?
Each lock has two shear lines instead of one. Inside a standard pin tumbler lock, there are 5-6 pin stacks. Each stack has a key pin (bottom) and a driver pin (top). When the right key pushes the pins to the correct height, a "shear line" forms between the key pins and driver pins, allowing the cylinder to rotate.
In a master key system, we add a tiny pin called a master wafer between the key pin and driver pin in each stack. This creates a second shear line. The individual key matches one shear line (opens only that door). The master key matches the second shear line (opens every door in the system). Two different keys, two different pin heights, both create a working shear line.
The beauty of this system is that you don't need new locks. We repin your existing Schlage, Kwikset, or Yale cylinders to work with the master key hierarchy. Same hardware, same door prep, different pin configuration inside the cylinder.
Who Uses Master Key Systems at Home?
Landlords, property managers, large homeowners, and multi-unit building owners. Here are the most common residential master key scenarios we set up:
- Duplex/triplex owners: Each tenant has their own key. The owner has one master key that opens every unit for maintenance, inspections, and emergencies. Tenants can't access each other's units.
- Small apartment buildings (4-12 units): Same concept but with more locks. The building manager gets a master, maintenance staff gets a sub-master that opens common areas but not units, and each tenant gets an individual key.
- Large single-family homes: One key for all exterior doors, but separate keys for the home office, wine cellar, gun room, or safe room. The homeowner carries the master. Family members get keys that open the front door but not the restricted rooms.
- Guest houses and pool houses: The main house key doesn't open the guest house. The guest house key doesn't open the main house. But the owner's master opens both.
According to the Associated Locksmiths of America, roughly 30% of residential master key requests come from homeowners, not landlords. It's more common than most people think.
How Much Does a Residential Master Key System Cost?
$150-$500 depending on the number of locks.
- 3-4 locks (duplex or small home): $150-$200
- 5-8 locks (triplex or large home): $200-$300
- 9-15 locks (small apartment building): $300-$500
- 15+ locks: Custom quote based on the key chart complexity
The price includes designing the pin chart, repinning every cylinder, cutting all master and individual keys, and documenting the system for future reference. If you need to add locks later, we keep the chart on file and pin new locks to match.
For larger commercial properties with 20+ doors, see our commercial master key systems page. Different pricing structure and more complex hierarchy options.
How Long Does Master Key System Installation Take?
1-3 hours depending on the number of locks. We do everything on-site in one visit. Here's the process:
- Design the key chart (15-30 minutes): We map out which keys open which doors. This is the most important step. A poorly designed chart can create cross-keying problems (where an individual key accidentally opens a door it shouldn't).
- Pull and repin each cylinder (10-15 minutes per lock): We remove the cylinder from each lock, replace the pins per the chart, and reinstall. Each lock gets its master wafers and individual key pins.
- Cut all keys (5-10 minutes total): We cut the master key and all individual keys on our mobile key machine.
- Test every lock with every key (5 minutes): Master key opens all. Each individual key opens only its assigned door. No cross-keying.
A typical 4-lock duplex takes about an hour. An 8-lock triplex takes about 2 hours. A 12-unit building takes 2.5-3 hours.
Is a Master Key System Less Secure Than Individual Locks?
Slightly, in theory. Negligibly, in practice. The extra shear line created by the master wafer is technically an additional manipulation point for a skilled lock picker. But picking a master-keyed lock requires the same tools and skill as picking a non-master-keyed lock. The vulnerability is theoretical, not practical.
For any residential application, the convenience of master keying far outweighs the microscopic security trade-off. If you need maximum security on specific doors (like a gun room or safe room), we can install high-security cylinders from Medeco or Mul-T-Lock on those specific doors within the master key system. Best of both worlds.
Can You Add New Locks to an Existing Master Key System?
Yes. We document every system we install. When you add a door (new construction, renovation, or adding a deadbolt), we pull your pin chart from our records and pin the new lock to match the existing system. The master key works on the new lock immediately. Takes about 20 minutes per additional lock.
This is one reason to have a professional set up your master key system rather than trying a DIY approach. We maintain records of every chart. If you lose the documentation, we can reconstruct it. If you need changes 2 years from now, we have the original chart ready to go.
Can You Master-Key Smart Locks?
Smart locks with physical keyways (like Schlage Encode) can be part of a master key system. The physical key override follows the master key chart. The electronic keypads stay individual with separate codes per door. So you get master key access through the physical cylinder AND individual code access through the keypad. Both systems work independently.
Smart locks without physical keyways (some August models) can't be master-keyed in the traditional sense. But they don't need to be. You manage access through the app instead.
Where Does Triton Locksmith Install Master Key Systems?
Any residential property in Broward or Palm Beach County. Duplexes, triplexes, small apartment buildings, large single-family homes, and estate properties. We service Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, Fort Lauderdale, and 44 other cities. Average response: 20 minutes. Call (561) 524-8500.
Common Questions
How much does a master key system cost?
$150 for a basic 3-4 lock system. $300-$500 for larger properties with 8-15 locks. We price per lock after the initial setup fee. Volume discounts available for property managers.
Can you add new locks to an existing master key system?
Yes. We document the pin chart when we set it up. New locks get pinned to match the system. Just call us when you add a door.
Is a master key system less secure than individual keys?
Slightly, in theory. The extra shear line creates an additional manipulation point. In practice, the difference is negligible for residential applications. A determined attacker has easier methods than exploiting master pins.
Can you master-key smart locks?
Smart locks with physical keyways (like Schlage Encode) can be part of a master key system. The keypad codes stay individual. The physical key override follows the master key chart.
How long does it take to set up a master key system?
1-3 hours depending on the number of locks. A 4-lock residential system takes about an hour. A 12-unit apartment building takes 2-3 hours.
What happens if I lose my master key?
We can cut a replacement master key from our records. We keep the pin chart for every system we install. If you want to invalidate the lost key entirely, we rekey the entire system to a new master. Same hierarchy, new pins, new keys.
Can you set up different levels of master keys?
Yes. We can create a grand master (opens everything), sub-masters (opens a specific group, like one floor or one building), and individual keys. Common setup for apartment buildings with a property manager, maintenance staff, and tenants.
Do I need to replace all my locks for a master key system?
No. We repin your existing cylinders. The lock bodies, bolts, and trim stay the same. Only the internal pins change. This works on most standard residential brands including Schlage, Kwikset, and Yale.
Can different brand locks be on the same master key system?
Only if they share the same keyway family. Schlage SC1 locks can be master-keyed together. Kwikset KW1 locks can be master-keyed together. But you can't mix Schlage and Kwikset on the same master key because the keyways are different shapes. We typically standardize all locks to one brand for best results.
Can a residential master key system work with smart locks?
Not directly. Master key systems are mechanical. Smart locks use electronic credentials. For a home that needs both, Triton Locksmith can set up mechanical master keying on standard locks and separate smart locks on primary entries.
