Will a Smart Lock Fit My Existing Door?

Almost always yes. Smart locks from Schlage, Yale, and Kwikset fit standard residential door preps: 2-1/8 inch face bore, 1 inch edge bore, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. That covers 95% of residential exterior doors in South Florida.

Potential fitment issues we check for:

• Door thickness: Most smart locks fit 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Thicker custom wood doors may need an extension kit (we carry them).
• Backset: The distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole. Standard is 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. Smart locks are adjustable between both.
• Existing bore hole condition: If the old deadbolt chewed up the bore, we may need to clean it out or use a spacer.
• Door gap: If the gap between the door and frame is too wide, the latch won't reach the strike plate. We adjust during installation.

If anything doesn't fit, we solve it on the spot. That's the advantage of having a locksmith install it instead of a DIY attempt where you discover the problem after removing your old deadbolt.

Do Smart Locks Work When the Wi-Fi Goes Down?

Yes. Every smart lock we install has a physical backup. Schlage Encode has a keypad AND a key cylinder. Yale Assure has a keypad. August preserves your existing key. Even with zero internet, zero Bluetooth, and dead batteries, you can still get in with the physical backup method.

Wi-Fi is only needed for remote access (locking/unlocking from your phone when you're away from home), receiving notifications, and voice assistant integration. The core lock-and-unlock function works locally without any internet connection.

How Long Do Smart Lock Batteries Last?

6-12 months on standard alkaline batteries. Schlage Encode uses 4 AA batteries and averages 6-8 months. Yale Assure uses 4 AA and averages 8-10 months. August uses a proprietary rechargeable battery that lasts about 6 months per charge.

South Florida heat reduces battery life by 20-30% compared to moderate climates. If your front door gets direct afternoon sun, expect the lower end of the range. We recommend keeping a spare set of batteries inside the door. You'll get a low-battery warning on the lock (blinking red light) and in the app weeks before it actually dies.
