Smart Lock Installation
$150 - $400 | 45-90 minutes | Available 24/7
Triton Locksmith installs and programs smart locks from Schlage, Yale, August, and Kwikset for $150-$400. That includes hardware, physical installation, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth pairing, app setup, and user code programming. Takes 45-90 minutes at your door.
What Smart Lock Brands Does Triton Locksmith Install?
Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure Lock 2, August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, and Kwikset Halo are our most popular installs. All four work with standard residential door preps and connect to your home Wi-Fi. We've installed hundreds of each across South Florida and know the quirks of every model.
Here's our honest ranking after installing them daily for years:
- Schlage Encode Plus ($280-$330): Our #1 pick. Built-in Wi-Fi, no hub needed. ANSI Grade 1 rated. Works with Apple Home Key, Alexa, and Google. Battery lasts 6-8 months. The app is actually good. Rock solid reliability.
- Yale Assure Lock 2 ($220-$280): Best for renters. Modular design lets you swap between Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, and Zigbee. ANSI Grade 2. Reversible installation so you can take it when you move.
- August Wi-Fi Smart Lock ($200-$270): Best if you want to keep your existing deadbolt exterior. Only replaces the interior half. Your old key still works. Adds app control, auto-lock, and auto-unlock via phone GPS.
- Kwikset Halo ($180-$250): Decent hardware but we've had more Wi-Fi connectivity complaints than any other brand. Fine if you have a strong router near the door. Frustrating if you don't.
What Does Smart Lock Installation Include?
Everything from the hardware to the last line of code. Here's exactly what we do during every smart lock install:
- Remove your existing deadbolt (or install from scratch if no deadbolt exists)
- Mount the new smart lock body, cylinder, and interior motor assembly
- Connect the lock to your home Wi-Fi network (we troubleshoot signal strength if needed)
- Download the manufacturer app on your phone and create your account
- Pair the lock to the app via Bluetooth
- Program your personal entry codes (most locks support 10-100 codes)
- Set up auto-lock (door locks automatically after 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 5 minutes)
- Set up auto-unlock if you want it (door unlocks when your phone approaches)
- Pair with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit if you use voice assistants
- Walk you through how everything works before we leave
According to a 2025 Parks Associates survey, 38% of smart lock owners had trouble with installation or setup. That's usually because they tried to DIY it and got stuck on the Wi-Fi pairing or the app configuration. We handle all of that. You're up and running before we drive away.
How Much Does Smart Lock Installation Cost?
$150-$400 total, including the lock hardware and full installation. Here's the pricing breakdown by model:
- Kwikset Halo Touch (fingerprint): $200-$280 installed
- Yale Assure Lock 2 (keypad + Wi-Fi): $250-$320 installed
- August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (retrofit): $220-$300 installed
- Schlage Encode Plus (our top pick): $320-$400 installed
If you already bought the lock and just need installation, we charge $75-$125 for install-only. But make sure you bought the right model for your door before we arrive. Wrong backset size or wrong door thickness = the lock won't fit. Call us first and we'll confirm the right model for your door.
Will a Smart Lock Fit My Existing Door?
Almost always yes. Smart locks from Schlage, Yale, and Kwikset fit standard residential door preps: 2-1/8 inch face bore, 1 inch edge bore, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. That covers 95% of residential exterior doors in South Florida.
Potential fitment issues we check for:
- Door thickness: Most smart locks fit 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Thicker custom wood doors may need an extension kit (we carry them).
- Backset: The distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole. Standard is 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. Smart locks are adjustable between both.
- Existing bore hole condition: If the old deadbolt chewed up the bore, we may need to clean it out or use a spacer.
- Door gap: If the gap between the door and frame is too wide, the latch won't reach the strike plate. We adjust during installation.
If anything doesn't fit, we solve it on the spot. That's the advantage of having a locksmith install it instead of a DIY attempt where you discover the problem after removing your old deadbolt.
Do Smart Locks Work When the Wi-Fi Goes Down?
Yes. Every smart lock we install has a physical backup. Schlage Encode has a keypad AND a key cylinder. Yale Assure has a keypad. August preserves your existing key. Even with zero internet, zero Bluetooth, and dead batteries, you can still get in with the physical backup method.
Wi-Fi is only needed for remote access (locking/unlocking from your phone when you're away from home), receiving notifications, and voice assistant integration. The core lock-and-unlock function works locally without any internet connection.
How Long Do Smart Lock Batteries Last?
6-12 months on standard alkaline batteries. Schlage Encode uses 4 AA batteries and averages 6-8 months. Yale Assure uses 4 AA and averages 8-10 months. August uses a proprietary rechargeable battery that lasts about 6 months per charge.
South Florida heat reduces battery life by 20-30% compared to moderate climates. If your front door gets direct afternoon sun, expect the lower end of the range. We recommend keeping a spare set of batteries inside the door. You'll get a low-battery warning on the lock (blinking red light) and in the app weeks before it actually dies.
Are Smart Locks Good for Airbnb and Vacation Rentals?
Perfect for them. Create a unique code for each guest. When they check out, delete the code. No physical keys to manage, no rekeying between guests, no lockbox on the door handle. Property managers in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Delray Beach use smart locks on rental properties constantly. Some models integrate directly with Airbnb and VRBO to auto-generate codes for each booking.
We also install keypad-only locks ($150-$350) for rental properties where you want code access without the Wi-Fi complexity. Simpler setup, fewer things to break, and codes are still changeable between guests.
